The Estevan 2016 Saskatchewan Summer Games are Launched
May 13, 2014

Estevan, Saskatchewan, Tuesday, May 13, 2014

The Estevan 2016 Saskatchewan Summer Games Committee launched their plans to the community in a small event hosted on Tuesday, May 13, 2014 at the Saskatchewan Energy Training Institute.  “We have had a lot of people in the community asking us questions and inquiring how they could get involved, so we decided to host a small event before we break ground on our first legacy project, the new track and field facility,” said co-chair Brian Senchuk.  “We will be holding a larger public event the beginning of September for all of Estevan to attend.  We are very excited about that.”

In attendance at the event were Ken Jacobs, design engineer and the selected project manager of the track and field project, as well as John Konihowski, track consultant for the legacy project.  Plans are under way, with ground breaking to occur in June 2014.  The completion target date is set for 2015 with the goal of hosting an event prior to the Games in 2016.

The donation from the Coal Country Run was acknowledged by the committee.  Bernie Bjorndelen, Co-chair of the Friend of the Games Committee expressed his thanks to the organizing committee of the Run.  Proceeds from the May 10, 2014 event will be donated to the track and field project.

The official mascots of the Games were introduced to Estevan. Tansi and Ravi are a sister and brother team of white-tailed deer. These mascots were chosen as the official mascots of the 2005 Canada Summer Games which was held in Regina, Saskatchewan.  At the conclusion of the Canada Games the mascots were gifted to the Saskatchewan Games Council which adopted them as the official mascots of the Saskatchewan Games program. The characteristic athleticism of the white-tailed deer makes it a perfect choice for the Saskatchewan Games.  The white-tailed deer exhibits many of the qualities and talents that are demonstrated by athletes.

Dayman Trucking was announced as the first local business sponsor of the Estevan 2016 Saskatchewan Summer Games. Dayman Trucking stepped forward with a ‘gift in kind’ donation.  Once being awarded the Games, the Estevan committee was informed all of the athlete bunk beds would be stored in Estevan until the Games.  Dayman Trucking has donated the use of eight C-Cans to the committee to serve that purpose.  As a Diamond Event Sponsor, they had the first opportunity to select naming rights on one of thirteen sporting venues. “In discussing our needs with Dayman Trucking, they were very quick to get involved with a donation.  They really came through for us when we needed them. We are excited to be able recognize their contribution to the community with a Diamond Event Sponsorship package.  We will be watching baseball at the Dayman Trucking Baseball Venue in 2016!” said Senchuk.
