Estevan, Saskatchewan, Friday, August 07, 2015
The organizers of the Coal Country Run along with the Estevan 2016 Saskatchewan Summer Games are excited to announce that once again the proceeds of their annual spring Coal Country Run on May 9, 2015 have been donated to the Estevan 2016 Saskatchewan Summer Games. When this donation of $3,080 raised in May is added to the proceeds of the May 2014 and the inaugural Fall ‘Run the Course’ from October 2014, the total amount donated equals $8,000.
The Coal Country Run began over eight years ago, as a dream of the Bienfait Women’s Hockey Team. They wanted an opportunity to run together, while raising funds for the Bienfait Memorial Arena. There were no sanctioned runs in the area, and with the growing number of runners in the community, they felt they had a great idea. In the six years of fundraising for the Arena, the Run raised over $24,000 for the Arena. Over the years, the course of the Run changed, and 2014 saw the route being relocated to the Woodlawn Regional Park. The spring version of the Run saw 120 runners and walkers participating. The 2015 Spring Run allowed participants to enroll in either running or walking the five or ten kilometer course. Also back by popular demand was the Kid’s Mini Mile.
“We are excited to be supporting the Estevan 2016 Saskatchewan Summer Games,” said organizer Debby Knight. “As runners ourselves, we actively promote physical activity. We love that the Games are coming to Estevan, energizing our community and promoting healthy lifestyles. We also know that it is a huge undertaking, with a lot of expenses as well as the creation of a legacy for our community. We wanted to be part in supporting that legacy. Of course, as runners, we are very excited about having a rubberized track as one of the legacy projects. We know many of the participants from our Runs have been already utilizing the new track.”
“We are so excited that the Coal Country Run approached us to partner with them again this year. These ladies had a remarkable vision years ago, and have worked hard to provide this runs for people,” stated Estevan 2016 Saskatchewan Summer Games Friends of the Games Co-Chair, Bernie Bjorndalen. “It is great to feel the energy of this community and have people come up with ways to contribute to the lasting legacy that the Games will create. “
Organizers are excited to announce that they will once again support the Estevan 2016 SSG with their October 24th, 2015 “Run the Course”. This course will take runners through the beautiful Woodlawn Golf Course. Online registration is available online through the Running Room’s website. Forms will be available on the Saskatchewan Summer Game’s website and Facebook page or at Henders Drugs.
