Saskatchewan Games Medal Design for the 2023 Saskatchewan Winter Games in Regina
Feb 20, 2023

Regina, SK (February 19, 2023) - The medals for the long-awaited 2023 Saskatchewan Winter Games in Regina, presented by Teine Energy, have been revealed. Over 1,000 young athletes will be competing for them during the Games from February 19-25, 2023.

Designed by a local Saskatchewan based company, Kenora Designs (Kenora Management Group Ltd.), the 2023’s medal reflects the beauty, culture, and history of Regina and our province, alongside the 50-year history of the Saskatchewan Games. The medal has 2 very distinctive sides:

  1. The front showcases a symbol of a bison with wheat fields behind representing Regina’s rich Indigenous history, originally known as Pile O’ Bones. The “bone piles were an effort by Indigenous Peoples to honour the animals’ spirits. The land where Regina now sits is part of the Treaty 4 area, which was established in 1874. Prior to the treaty’s signing, Indigenous Peoples had followed the bison through the area”, writes the City of Regina.
    1. Included on the front of the medal, is a Plains Cree word, miyo-mônêhotôwin which translates to ‘good challenge amongst each other’. Miyo-mônêhotôwin “is a term used when a group of people are competing amongst each other in a positive way”, says Doreen Oakes (BA Cree Linguistics, BED).
  2. The back showcases the Saskatchewan Games 50th Anniversary logo. For 50 years, the Saskatchewan Games have provided an opportunity for the province’s developing athletes, coaches, and officials to participate in a multi-sport event to prepare for higher level of competition. The Games have fostered community spirit and pride, played a significant role in developing volunteerism and contributed to sport facilities and equipment in 14 communities across our province.

Quotes
“The design of the medal is not just a symbol of achievement, but also a representation of the 2023 Saskatchewan Winter Games Host Committee. LIFT (Leadership, Inclusion, Fun and Thrive) are woven into the design but also the Games values, reflecting the idea that greatness is not achieved alone, but through the collective efforts of an inclusive community”- Valerie Sluth, 2023 Saskatchewan Winter Games Chairperson.

“A picture is worth a thousand words, but a well-designed medal is worth a lifetime of memories! The medal design is not just an emblem of achievement, but a symbol of the dedication, hard work and perseverance that our committee, athletes, volunteers, and participants put into the Games”- Leanne Schellenberg, 2023 Saskatchewan Winter Games Manager.
