2016 Saskatchewan Summer Games Set to Begin

The 2016 Saskatchewan Summer Games will take place from July 24 – 30 in Estevan, SK. There will be approximately 2000 athletes, coaches, managers and mission staff from over 270 communities in Saskatchewan, making these Games the largest in their history.

The Saskatchewan Games play an integral role in the development of sport within the province.  Taking place every two years alternating between summer and winter, the games are an opportunity for athletes, coaches and officials to participate in a competitive multi-sport event.

In addition to being an exceptional amateur sporting event, the games exhibit Saskatchewan’s spectacular volunteer dedication and community cooperation. The Estevan 2016 Saskatchewan Summer Games will have over 1000 dedicated volunteers from the community and surrounding areas. 

Estevan last hosted the Saskatchewan Summer Games in 1980, and the city is well prepared for 2016. After three years of planning, a legacy of new sport equipment as well as upgraded and new facilities will be left within the community.

The Opening Ceremonies will kick off the 2016 Saskatchewan Summer Games, taking place at 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 24th at Affinity Place. The Opening Ceremonies can be viewed live on Access7.

Tickets to the Opening and Closing Ceremonies as well as to the sport events can be purchased online prior to, or at any venue during Games time.

The week long games are divided into two separate halves with different sports competing each half:

Participants will represent the nine (9) Sport, Recreation and Culture Districts established throughout the province:

North – La Ronge, Buffalo Narrows, Cumberland House areas
Lakeland – Prince Albert, Hudson Bay, Rosthern areas
Parkland Valley – Melville, Yorkton, Kamsack areas
Prairie Central – Humboldt, Wynyard, Davidson areas
Regina – City of Regina
Rivers West – Lloydminster, North Battleford, Rosetown areas
Saskatoon – City of Saskatoon
South East – Estevan, Weyburn, White City areas
South West – Moose Jaw, Swift Current, Maple Creek areas

The 2016 Saskatchewan Summer Games will be the third Games hosted by the South East District. Previous Games in the area include the 1980 Saskatchewan Summer Games (Estevan) and the 2004 Saskatchewan Summer Games (Weyburn). 

The Saskatchewan Games provide the province’s developing athletes, coaches and officials an opportunity to participate in a multi-sport games in preparation for a higher level of competition.  The Saskatchewan Games is proud of its alumni representing Canada at the 2016 Paralympic Summer Games in Rio:

The Closing Ceremonies will take place on Saturday, July 30, beginning at 4:00 p.m. at Affinity Place in Estevan.
