2023 Saskatchewan Winter Games Begin Today Featuring a Culture Festival Including a Truth and Reconciliation in Sport Panel Discussion – Free and Open to the Public

Regina, SK (February 19, 2023) – The 2023 Saskatchewan Winter Games in Regina, presented by Teine Energy, will run from February 19-25, 2023. In addition to competition among 1,400+ participants in 16 different sports, the 2023 Saskatchewan Winter Games will feature numerous other events that the media and public are invited to attend. 

Torch Relay

The Torch Relay, sponsored by Scotiabank, will feature notable leaders in Canadian sport including Colleen Sostorics and Carol Lafayette-Boyd carrying the torch across Regina.

Opening Ceremony

The 2023 Saskatchewan Winter Games will officially begin with the Opening Ceremony!

The 2023 Saskatchewan Winter Games in Regina invites the public to attend its free Culture Festival, presented by CGI. The festival includes three days of interactive learning and celebration of Saskatchewan’s diverse cultures and talent. The Culture Festival will run from 6:30 - 9:00 PM nightly from Tuesday, February 21 through Thursday, February 23 at the University of Regina Education Auditorium. Free parking is available in University of Regina Lots 7 and 10.

The event on Wednesday, February 22 will feature a keynote speech from Sydney Daniels, followed by a panel discussion on Truth and Reconciliation in Sport. Daniels, of Mistawasis Nêhiyawak First Nation, is the first-ever female NHL Scout for the Winnipeg Jets. She will be joined by her father, NHL veteran Scott Daniels. Moderated by Bryan Eneas of CBC, the panel will also feature Indigenous sport leaders Eric Honetschlager, Jackson Serna, and Amy Shipley. 

The events on Tuesday, February 21 and Thursday, February 23 will feature entertaining and diverse cultural performances from groups across Saskatchewan, including the Grey Buffalo Singers, the Regina Highland Dance Association, the Tavria Ukrainian Dance Group, the Creeland Dance Group, and many more.

The Culture Festival was chaired and organized by Len Daniels, Shelly Daniels, and Joe Daniels of George Gordon First Nation. 

Closing Ceremony 

The Closing Ceremony will bring the weeklong Games to a close and highlight the next Host Community for the Saskatchewan Summer Games in 2024!
