Discovery Co-op will be a platinum sponsor for the Saskatchewan Winter Games, thanks to their $25,000 commitment to the event.

The announcement was officially made at a cheque presentation at Lawrence School on Tuesday at their 'pay it forward' lunch, where they provide schools all over the Battlefords with food for lunch and help serve it. Discovery Co-op also announced it will be the food sponsor of the games, responsible for feeding athletes next February.

"We are very very lucky that the [Games] are able to be here," Mike Nord, general manager of the North Battleford Discovery Co-op said. "Part of what a Co-op is about is being a part of the community. Because our members are made up of the community, [it's important] that we're a part of that community."

Rob Rongve and David Schell, co-chairs of the Winter Games committee, were also on site with some of their other Winter Games crew members to help out and meet some of the kids at the school.

Rongve once again thanked thheir newest sponsor.

"We want to celebrate with the Co-op, Discovery Co-op, Mike Nord and all of his amazing crew that he has here today," Rongve said. "They've been a huge part of our planning for the winter games and we'd like to announce that they very generously have donated to support the games."

Following the announcement, Nord added that the games are huge for this community, as they don't come around very often.

"What a great way to represent the Battlefords and the area and show why the community is such a great community," he said. "We all know some of the things that have been said about the Battlefords and area in the media, it's not always flattering, but I'll tell you what: it's a great place to live, it's a great place to hold events and I think the Winter Games will prove it's a wonderful place."

As for the challenge of feeding all 1,800 athletes at the games, Nord joked "There is a plan!"

He said the Co-op went through a process and was lucky to be chosen.

"I think we're up for the challenge and I know for a fact that we'll do a good job," he said. "We're really proud of that fact and happy to be a part of that whole process."

The Saskatchewan Winter Games run from Feb. 18-24, 2018. They will feature roughly 1,800 athletes from across the provinec in 17 different sports.
