Tennis Venue
Meadow Lake’s tennis courts located in West View Park were showing their age. So the local Games Council and the City, therefore chose this venue as one to develop as a legacy project for the City. After reviewing a number of possible sites, the work began on City/School land west of the Junior High School in August after the weather and storms delayed the proposed July start. This location allowed for the development of a four court, paved, fenced facility that is within walking distance for 5 of the 6 schools in Meadow Lake. The courts are adjacent to the soccer pitches as well, localizing the recreational facilities the City has to offer.

Here we see some of the dirt that has been removed, in the background and the beginning of the packing of the gravel base. Jonas Samson Junior High is in the back on the right side and the storefront school, Transition Place can be seen far in the background in the centre. To the left side of the picture and out of view is Jubilee Elementary School. So, as you can see, the facility is very central for school use, as the High School is only a block away to the southeast.

Tansi and Ravi, the mascots for the Saskatchewan Summer Games are seen here in August 2011 checking out the site for tennis. The gravel base was being packed after the grounds had been scraped and a significant amount of grass and topsoil removed to prepare for the construction of the tennis courts.

This was the official ribbon cutting ceremony for the project in September 2011. The R.M. of Meadow Lake provided the equipment and man power to prepare the grounds for the tennis courts so Reeve John Lawson had the pleasure of cutting the ribbon while Doug Murray, the foreman for the R.M. looks on from behind him. Other representatives are members of the local Games Council and from left to right are Cliff McKay (Marketing), Wayne Pike (Friends of the Games) Ravi, Brian Gislason(Co-Chair) and his grandson Noah, Tansi, and Glen Winkler (Co-Chair)The group is standing on one of the cement pads poured by the SIIT construction class for the bleachers which are also a legacy project.

Once the base was packed, the fencing crew moved in to dig the holes for the fencing.

October 2011 saw the paving crew move in and pour a thick asphalt base that will stand the test of time!
The weather held and...

...the fencing began! (Now you can see the elementary school in the background)

The soil was leveled around the pavement and the weatherman continued to assist us as the fencing was installed in November!

With the fencing being completed, winter arrived!
In the spring, a border of cement will be poured around the edge of the court to ensure that the fence is secured and grass and dirt are not an issue on the paved surface or for the occasional tennis ball that goes astray. The final stage of this development will entail a plexipave coating applied to the pavement (this is the green coating as seen on TV).
The Games Council for Meadow Lake would like to extend their sincere thanks to the R.M. of Meadow Lake, the City of Meadow Lake, and the many contractors who helped develop this first class venue for our community. Seating for the games will be along the south side (the near side in the picture), so come and join us for the Games and see the young tennis players from across the province competing for Gold!
