About Meadow Lake
Meadow Lake - Proudly Saskatchewan’s newest city is thrilled to be hosting the 2012 Saskatchewan Summer Games!!!
Some of you may ask...Where is Meadow Lake? Well, Meadow Lake is located in the heart of Northwest Saskatchewan; situated perfectly in the agricultural, forest, and tourism industries. Our community is approximately 158 km north of the Battlefords and just a short drive away to two of the provinces most popular and largest Provincial Parks - the Meadow Lake Provincial Park and the Makwa Lake Provincial Park. Mother Nature has, definitely, put all of her best assets into one area.
First settled by the First Nations, fur traders, and pioneers, Meadow Lake still enjoys the spirit of adventure. As part of the Churchill River system fur trading network, a surveyor and explorer for the Hudson Bay Company traveled the area on the Beaver River. In 1889 a group of Cree Indians already living around Meadow Lake entered into a treaty with the government of Canada and later became the Flying Dust First Nation. The coming of the railroad to Meadow Lake in 1931 started an economic boom. In 1936 Meadow Lake was incorporated as a Town. The retail and service sector expanded dramatically to serve the agriculture, forest and fishing industries. In 1995, Meadow Lake earned the privileged title, Forest Capital of Canada. The community continues to expand; earning City Status in 2009. The population of Meadow Lake and area is approximately 8,017.
The City of Meadow Lake offers everything that most other cities offer, just on a smaller scale. This active community is very involved in sports and many other recreational activities. When you have so many different natural assets in your backyard you use nature as your playground and explore. No matter what the season, Meadow Lake is an amazing place to live or visit. Residents and visitors always have a wide selection of activities to partake in. Whether it be camping, swimming, fishing, quadding, golfing, hockey, baseball, shopping, leisurely walks, and vigorous hikes, there is no shortage of things to do.
Friendly faces, a caring community, and an abundance of recreational opportunities are what Meadow Lake is all about. Surrounding communities such as Loon Lake, Dorintosh, Rapid View, Flying Dust First Nation, Makwa, Goodsoil, and Green Lake are just a few communities that travel to Meadow Lake daily for work, shopping, and recreation. These municipalities, to us, are part of our community.
